Cambodia kicks off activities to attract international tourists amid Covid-19

Minister Thong Khon also said that Cambodia will organize two major international tourism events to attract international tourists to Cambodia: the International Sailing Race to be held in December 2021 and the ASEAN Tourism Forum. in January 2022 in the coastal city of Preah Sihanouk, Preah Sihanouk province.


Mr. Kouch Chamroeun, governor of Preah Sihanouk province, asked professional staff from the Ministry of Tourism and the provincial Departments of Tourism to organize a training course for tourism businesses on various safety rules, especially so that they can update their travel safety rules and minimum standard operating procedures (SOPs) according to the new situation, to ensure Cambodia is a safe and green tourist destination.


Cambodia's tourism industry has been seriously affected since the Covid-19 pandemic appeared in China at the end of 2019. In particular, the number of international visitors to Cambodia in 2020 is 1.31 million, down 80, 2% compared to 2019, pushing the revenue of this country's tourism industry to lose more than 3 billion USD (only reaching 1,023 billion USD, down 79.2% compared to 2019).


This decline has directly affected the contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Cambodia's spearhead economic sector. In 2020, the tourism industry contributes only 3% to GDP, while in 2019 it contributed 12.1%.
